Minnesota summers are short, and families want to make the most of them – free summer activities for families like a trip to the park, a day at the lake, bubbles in the backyard, or a walk around the neighborhood are all wonderful ways to enjoy the season together. But a safe, fun summer also takes a few basics like sunscreen, swim safety gear, and books. These and other simple steps help kids stay active, curious, and connected. That’s why our Neighbors Who Care: Summer Drive is helping families get ready for the sunny days ahead.

Summer can bring extra challenges for families, too. School-year routines change, children spend more time outdoors, and the cost of keeping kids safe and engaged can add up quickly. Small supports like free community events, books to read together, and safe ways to stay active outdoors can help children keep learning and exploring throughout the summer.

Ashley Booker, CEO of YWCA St. Paul

This year, we’re also excited to welcome Ashley Booker, one of Way to Grow’s newest board members. Ashley is the CEO of YWCA St. Paul, as well as a lifelong Saint Paul resident and a leader who understands how much families need safe, welcoming spaces to learn, play, and connect. We asked Ashley to share a little about summer safety, family fun, and why this work matters.

Fun, Safe Summer Ideas for Minnesota Families

I think one of the biggest things families can do is create opportunities for kids to explore, move, and be curious. It doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate. Simple things like visiting parks, libraries, splash pads, neighborhood festivals, or even having dance parties and game nights at home can create meaningful memories and keep kids engaged. I also think summer is a great time to unplug a bit and prioritize connection — conversations at the dinner table, cooking together, reading together, and spending quality time outdoors all matter.

What drew me to Way to Grow is its deep commitment to children and families during such a critical stage of development. I really believe that strong communities are built by investing early, supporting families holistically, and helping children build confidence, curiosity, and a strong foundation for the future. The organization’s relationship-based approach and focus on walking alongside families aligns strongly with both my personal values and the work we’re doing at YWCA St. Paul.

And because Minnesota summers deserve to be enjoyed, we also asked Ashley to share a few of her favorite free and low-cost places for families to visit during the summer.

Minnesota summers really are special. We love hanging out at our local parks and lakes, checking out community festivals, enjoying live outdoor music, and just being outside as much as possible while the weather is nice. The YWCA is always a great option for families because it offers opportunities to swim, stay active, and connect with community. I’m also a big fan of spaces that bring people together across generations — whether that’s local rec centers, neighborhood events, farmers markets, or simply gathering with friends and family for a backyard BBQ, music, games, and conversation.
